O V Wright is a big fave of all of us here at Chitlins...
KC has supplied a biography accompanying his post of 'The Complete Backbeat and ABC Recordings', which are undeniably OV's greatest achievements ( Check this out under the 'Featuring' tag ).
Preslives provided us with his earlier gospel recordings and Poppachubby has become a new and cherished fan of this great Southern deep-soul singer ( Chubbs will have more to say about OV in some great future posts here ... so stay tuned)
This is OV's only known and available live recording - Made up of performances recorded over 2 nights in Tokyo during September 1979 on his sole visit to Japan - He is accompanied by the Hi Records Rhythm section, consisting of the Hodges brothers, Charles, Leroy and Teenie on keyboards, bass and guitar, Howard Grimes on drums, Melvin Rodgers trumpet, Dennis Bates trombone and James Webb backing vocals.
Tracks - 1. I'd Rather Be Blind Crippled And Crazy 2. Ace Of Spades 3. Eight Men And Four Women 4. Precious Precious 5. Love And Happiness 6. Medley - God Blessed Our Love - When A Man Loves A Woman - That's How Strong My Love Is - You're Gonna Make Me Cry 7. Into Something (Can't Shake Loose)

OH HELL YEAH!There may be a few others IN HIS CLASS but none BETTER than O.V.
thanks for this. whenever OV would pop up on some Kent vinyl comp back in the '90s, i would invariably say, "oh yeah, i have to remember to find some of his albums." great melding of blues and soul in his voice
and i did LOVE those Kent vinyl comps . . . had 50+ til a house fire did them in . . . don't even get me started, i tear up at the thought even now.
Thanks Gus! Can't wait to listen to this.
Pffffft... what can I say??? Can't wait to crack this open!!! Really appreciated Gus, great post as always. And davidwolf, that's a terrible tale.
Delbert McClinton just released a new album, entitled "Blind, Crippled and Crazy." One would assume it would include a cover of the OV Wright classic - but, one would assume wrong. WTF.
Really enjoyed the Complete Backbeat and ABC set posted by KC, so looking forward to this one. Many thanks, Gus.
Gus I should add that I actually grabbed your mp3 rather than convert the FLAC myself. My car will not play FLAC. Thought you might like to hear that your efforts are worth it. Fuckin great album!!!
Christmas comes early. The great O.V. Sublime stuff. Raw as gravel, honey smooth.
Many thanks gentlemen.
The annonymous Zed.
Man oh man, thanks so much for this Gus!! There are so many high points on this album, I don't know where to start. First of all I love the bass tone, alot more slinky than the recordings and we even get some slap/pop on Love & Happiness. Overall the band are never too loose but never too stiff, a real fluid style from all - a bit like a jam. The treatment for 8 Men is superb and I love the organ which comps for the backing vocals; also the shredding guitar licks during the verse.
Oh and of course i love OV's prayer routine during God Blessed... His voice is so strong and soulful on all of the tunes. Not a moment on the album where you are thinking "yikes, too high" or "damn lost your key brotha".
I have played this 4 times now. Somehow I feel closer to him by listening to it even though he is long gone. I suppose that's the best sign of a good album. Thanks again Gus.
Oh I also want to add that i love the funkiness. It';s that real classic funk, not the phony disco funk which sounds dated today.
I agree with all you said ...I felt like that when I first heard it - And the flacs that you posted are GREAT ! Played it 3 times today...So thank You !!!
And thanks Jazzjet.....I said I owe you one
Wait til you hear the Treasured Moments disc which is all of the Goldwax stuff... to die for.
Thanks You :)
