The Badgett Sisters are an American folk and gospel group from Yanceyville in Caswell County, North Carolina, and recipients of a 1990 North Carolina Heritage Award. The trio began singing together in 1933 and consisted of sisters Celester, Connie, and Cleonia Badgett.
Under their father's tutelage, the Badgett Sisters learned to sing spirituals, hymns, and gospel songs in the jubilee style, a form of unaccompanied close harmony learned from their father, Cortelyou Odell Badgett (1905-1978). They sing in the jubilee style, a form popular in the 1930s and 1940s. The Badgett Sisters began performing at the ages of 4-6. All of the Badgetts' arrangements are original.

A while back we had a conversation about some reading material which was useful to me in finding new listening experiences. For those who are just getting into gospel recordings might I suggest Anthony Heilbut's book "The Gospel Sound". A great into to the subject with a spectacular listing of suggested recordings. It has been through several editions and the earliest version (Anchor Press 1975 when he still went by Tony Heilbut) has an all vinyl listing. The 6th edition (Limelight 2002 reprint of the 1997 edition) has an all CD listing. Worth noting that while the two lists mention essentially the same artists there are major differences among the recorded material mentioned. All told there are probably some 250 recordings mentioned.
This has been a great series - thanks so much for making the music on these cassette tapes available! It was a joy to hear The Badgett Sisters still singing jubilee-style gospel quartet harmony so beautifully.
It happened too many times before, I'm happy to inform that it won't happen again.
