Sam Charters produced this marvelously funky collection of oldies rendered Eaglin-style with an all-star Crescent City combo: pianist Ellis Marsalis, saxist Clarence Ford, and the French brothers as rhythm section. Eaglin's revisit of "Yours Truly" floats over a rhythmic bed so supremely second-line funky that it's astonishing, while he personalizes the New Orleans classics "Oh Red," "Down Yonder," and "Let the Four Winds Blow" as only Snooks Eaglin can. - Bill Dahl (AMG)

I miss being able to go to Rock n Bowl nearly any week and see Snooks, he never failed to pull out some tune I had never heard before. This is a unique ensemble with him here that is unlike any other Snooks on record. It is also notable for having both French brothers on it who nowadays can't stand to be in the same room with each other. (obviously this was written before Bob died)

Love this guys voice. Thank you.
I gotta give a belated thank you for this -- I've been listening to this a lot the past few days and it's getting better and better. Totally infectious stuff! Thank you for this. I'm in love with it.
Belated thanks born from thoughtful listening are actually far more appreciated. we (the bloggers) often forget how long it takes to actually listen and digest something - what i am most grateful for is that you would come back to share your thoughts.
It really is an oddly addicting little album, isn't it?

Love Snooks.
Miss him.
Great stuff. Thanks.
thanks!!
One year, during Jazz Fest, I had made plans to see Porter, Jr & his Pardners at Jimmy's - and saw the show started later in the evening - then I remembered - They (The Running Pardners) wouldn't be able to get there before a certain time because, at that time, they were backing up Snooks. No problem with that - - we just went to the Rock n Bowl and caught Snooks - great evening of music. It was always more than a treat having the chance to see Snooks. I wasn't there but there's a story, and a friend of mine was there, that Snooks was playing somewhere and Russell Batiste, Jr was, obviously, playing drums. His chair broke, in mid song, and he landed on the floor - but didn't miss a beat sitting on the floor as he continued to play his drums. The crowd, as is said, went wild - and Snooks couldn't figure out what was going on - because Russell, as always, didn't miss a beat. Only in New Orleans! Thanks for the blog and thanks for reminding me about this album.
yes! thank you so much for this repost, KC!! I am very happy to have this again.
